Mad Science of Iowa is a franchise of The Mad Science Group. Our programs are created by a team of professional scientists and teachers at our head office, in Montreal, QC. Millions of children in over 160 locations, in 22 countries enjoy our programs. Mad Science of has been running camps in this area over the last 8 summers.
For the youngest campers there are usually 10 to 12 children in a camp. For the older campers, there are usually 12 to 15 children in a camp. See below for whether your child is considered "younger" or "older" for our camp purposes.
Our younger-age camps are for children who have been in or will be in, or are of the age to have been eligible for or will be eligible for, a preschool program during the past school year or the upcoming school year. Our older-age camps are for those entering 1st through 4th grade the next school year. The programming is totally different for the older-age, versus the younger-age camps.
Yes, as noted above. To achieve our age-appropriate goal, the instructor decides in the early stage of the first day of camp, whether it is best to small-group the children by age, or to use the buddy system with older ones helping the younger. If you have siblings in the same camp, you may let us know whether to group them together or not.
Mad Science instructors tend to be college students pursuing an education or science degree, former/retired teachers, or teachers on summer break. Most of our instructors have worked for us in our after-school programs. All of our instructors have experience working with groups of elementary-aged children and have undergone a background check similar to any teacher in the central Iowa area.. They also receive summer-camp specific training. The main characteristic of our instructors is that they all share a love of working with children and the desire to spark and nurture their campers’ imaginations!
Almost all our camps are held Monday through Thursday. The younger-age camps are usually 8:30a to 10a, or 10:30a to Noon. The older-age camps are usually 1p to 4p each day.
Registration is always on-line, no matter the location. If the location has its own on-line registration system, you will use it. If they do not have their own, you will use our on-line registration system located on this website. Which on-line system to use is on the flyer/e.flyer provided through your school/other organization. If you did not receive any information on a camp, just contact us and we will fill your cup!
If your location has its own on-line registration system, we must go by their rules. All accept major credit cards, and some may have other payment options. The Mad Science system allows major credit cards, check or money-order. Due to limited spaces in each camp, we cannot reserve a space for your child until we receive your payment, so if you are paying by check or money order through the Mad Science system, we cannot officially reserve your space until we receive the check or money order.
If your location has its own on-line registration system, once again we must go by their rules. For the Mad Science system, cancellations communicated to us 30 or more days prior to the start of the camp are subject to a refund, less a $25 service charge. Cancellations communicated 14 to 29 days prior to the start of the camp will be given a refund, less a $50 service charge.
No refunds can be given for cancellations 13 days or less prior to the start of the camp. Supplies have been purchased, schedules are set, and we are often under obligation to pay the camp-facility a facility-fee at that point in time. At any time prior to the start of a camp, you may transfer your registration to another child with no service charge.
If we do not get sufficient enrollment to hold the camp, Mad Science will make every effort to provide alternative camp locations, or you will be offered the option of a full refund.
Mad Science provides all the equipment and materials for both the in-camp activities and the take home projects. All you need to provide is a child who is ready to have fun! Children should dress comfortably for that day's weather. We ask that children wear secure footwear to a Mad Science camp (please, especially no flip-flops). We are outside on occasion, but only for a short break, so it is not necessary for you to apply sunscreen, or have your child where a hat and/or sunglasses, but of course you may do any of these things if you wish.
You are welcome to send your child to the camp with a snack and/or water bottle. Water fountains are available at each of our camp locations. For any snacks, please note we cannot guarantee refrigeration is available at any given camp location.
Prior to actual attendance at a Mad Science summer camp, we require certain medical information from you regarding your camper. This is to assist the camp instructor with knowledge of specific considerations for your camper. Please note this must include if your child has ADD or ADHD and it is not always fully controlled by medication. You provide this information during registration.
You must be aware that all summer-camp activities involve some risk, and, by registering for a camp, there is an assumption of risk made by the participant. Mad Science is dedicated to securing safe facilities for our camps and using personnel and equipment that is designed to be safe. However, Mad Science instructors are NOT trained in provision of medical services of any kind.
By enrolling your child in a Mad Science camp, you do agree to not hold Mad Science Group, its Franchisees, Agents, Representatives, Facilities, Employees, Managers, Contractors and Instructors liable for any medical emergencies or conditions your child may experience, related directly or indirectly to a camp.
